Full Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Paro
Arriving in Paro is an experience in itself, as your flight offers stunning views of the Himalayas. Upon landing, you’ll be welcomed by your guide and transferred to town. After lunch, begin exploring with a visit to the National Museum, set inside the former watchtower Ta Dzong, where you’ll find an impressive collection of religious artefacts and traditional art. Continue to Rinpung Dzong, admired for its intricate architecture and beautiful murals of the saint Milarepa. Walk across the traditional wooden bridge before heading back to your hotel for the evening.
Day 2: Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)
Today features Bhutan’s most famous hike to Taktsang Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliff. The trail winds through pine forests decorated with prayer flags. After about an hour, you’ll reach a viewpoint cafeteria with incredible views of the monastery.
According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated for months. You can continue further uphill for closer views before descending for lunch. The return walk offers fresh perspectives of the valley.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours.
Day 3: Hike to Bumdrak Monastery
After breakfast, drive to Sangchoekor Buddhist College and start your hike toward Bumdrak Monastery. The trail climbs through forested paths and open ridges with sweeping views of Paro Valley. At the monastery, located at 3,800m, you’ll be rewarded with a peaceful atmosphere and remarkable scenery. A picnic lunch is served here before descending to meet your driver and return to Paro for the night.
Day 4: Paro to Thimphu
Travel to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. Visit Tashichhoe Dzong, an important administrative and religious center. Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, a place where locals gather to pray. At the Institute of Zorig Chusum, observe students practicing traditional Bhutanese arts, then browse handcrafted items at the Craft Bazaar. End the day with a visit to Zilukha Nunnery before checking into your hotel.
Day 5: Hike to Phajoding Monastery
Today’s hike leads to Phajoding Monastery, a peaceful retreat founded in the 13th century. The trail passes through pine and fir forests rich in wildlife. At the top, enjoy panoramic views over Thimphu Valley and visit the monastery, home to resident monks in meditation. After a packed lunch, return to Thimphu.
Hiking time: around 4 hours.
Day 6: Dochula Pass to Lungchutse and onward to Punakha
Drive to Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens stand against a stunning Himalayan backdrop. Begin your hike through rhododendron forests toward Lungchutse Temple, offering spectacular panoramic mountain views on clear days. Continue downhill to a quiet monastery before heading to Punakha for the evening.
Day 7: Hike to Hokatsho Lake
Set out on a scenic trek through forest and small villages to reach the hidden Hokatsho Lake. The trail gradually ascends past temples and lush vegetation filled with birdlife. At the lake, take time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Afterward, descend along a different path and stop at a local farmhouse for lunch and tea before returning.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours.
Day 8: Punakha to Thimphu via Chimi Lhakhang, then continue to Paro
After breakfast, take a short walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, known as the Temple of Fertility. Built in the 15th century, it is associated with the revered figure Drukpa Kuenley. After visiting, drive back over Dochula Pass with scenic mountain views before continuing onward to Paro.
Day 9: Explore Paro Valley
Spend the day discovering more of Paro Valley. Visit the ruins of Drukgyal Dzong, built to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan forces, and enjoy views of Mount Chomolhari if the weather is clear. Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, and Druk Choding, located in the town center. In the evening, explore Paro’s local markets before a farewell dinner.
Day 10: Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your departure. Leave Bhutan with unforgettable memories of its landscapes, culture, and peaceful atmosphere.
