Day 1: Paro to Thimphu - Welcome to Bhutan & Thimphu Sightseeing
Tashi Delek and welcome to the Land of the Thunder Dragon!
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, the only international airport in Bhutan, your guide and driver will warmly greet you. En route to your hotel, stop at the Paro Airport Bird’s Eye View Point for sweeping views of Paro Valley, Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum, and the Paro Chu River.
After settling in, drive 1.5 hours to Thimphu, Bhutan’s vibrant capital. Begin your city tour with a visit to the colossal Buddha Dordenma Statue, perched above the valley, and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view. Then, head to the National Memorial Chorten, a revered monument built in honor of the Third King and a popular site for locals to perform their daily kora.
End the day with a visit to the majestic Tashichho Dzong, the seat of government and the monastic body. If time permits, explore the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s national animal and the Zilukha Nunnery for scenic views of Thimphu Dzong. Optionally, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese dinner at the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant before checking into your hotel in Thimphu.
Day 2: Thimphu - Punakha: Dochula Pass, Chimi Lhakhang & Punakha Dzong
Today, embark on a scenic drive from Thimphu to Punakha, ascending to the picturesque Dochula Pass at 3,120 meters. Here, you’ll find 108 chortens built to honor fallen soldiers and catch a glimpse of the Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Gangkar Puensum, if weather allows. Continue downhill into the subtropical Punakha Valley and take a short hike through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the Fertility Temple dedicated to the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley. Admire the colorful and humorous artwork that adorns the surrounding village.
Upon arriving in Punakha, visit the awe-inspiring Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress, strategically situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The Dzong, built in 1637, played a crucial role in Bhutanese history and still serves as the winter residence of the monastic body. Wander its three large courtyards and marvel at the sacred murals, ancient relics, and towering utse (central tower). Spend the night in Punakha and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this historic former capital.

Day 3: Punakha - Paro: Suspension Bridge, Khamsum Yulley Chorten & Paro Exploration
Begin your day with a crossing of the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in Bhutan, offering spectacular views of the river and valley below. Then, hike through terraced fields to the stunning Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a temple built by the Queen Mother to promote world peace. This uniquely designed stupa houses intricate statues of protective deities and offers panoramic views from its rooftop. Afterward, drive back to Paro via Dochula Pass, stopping along the way at Tamchog Lhakhang, an ancient temple built by the iron bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo. Upon reaching Paro, visit the impressive Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong), a fortress overlooking the river that has played a vital role in Bhutanese governance and religion. Cross its traditional cantilever bridge and then head to the Bhutan National Museum (Ta Dzong), housed in a former watchtower, to explore Bhutan’s rich cultural and historical heritage. After a fulfilling day, rest overnight in Paro.
Day 4: Paro: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Drukgyel Dzong & Kyichu Lhakhang
Today is the highlight of your Bhutan journey as you embark on the famous hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), perched dramatically on a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. The round-trip hike takes about 5 to 6 hours, with the option to ride a horse halfway. At the Taktsang Cafeteria midway, enjoy a meal with a scenic view of the monastery before continuing on foot. Upon arrival, explore the sacred site where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated in the 8th century after arriving on the back of a flying tigress. The spiritual energy and spectacular setting make this one of the most iconic landmarks in Bhutan.
After descending, visit the nearby ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, once a defensive stronghold against Tibetan invasions. Conclude the day with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan, believed to have been built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. It’s a peaceful and fitting end to your Bhutan adventure. Overnight in Paro.
