Full Itinerary
Day 1: Trongsa – Tongtongphey – Jangbi Village
Distance: 7–9.5 km | Duration: 3–4 hours | Altitude: 1,000–1,350 m
After breakfast, you may explore Trongsa town, visiting the Dzong or the Watchtower Museum, known for its impressive collection of artifacts. A two-hour drive along the Zhemgang highway leads to Tongtongphey, the starting point of the trek. An optional visit to Kuenga Rabten Palace adds cultural depth to the journey. Crossing the Mangdi River via a suspension bridge, you may encounter the rare Golden Langur along the way. The trail also introduces you to the Monpa community, believed to be Bhutan’s earliest inhabitants. The day ends at a scenic campsite in Jangbi, overlooking the Mangdi Valley, with opportunities to enjoy or participate in local cultural activities.
Day 2: Jangbi Village – Kudra Village
Distance: 13–14.5 km | Duration: ~6 hours | Altitude: 1,350–1,500 m
Spend the morning interacting with the Monpa people and visit an orchid garden featuring around 75 species. The trail to Kudra passes sacred sites associated with Guru Rinpoche, including imprints of his footprints and symbolic artifacts. After lunch near Phrumzur village and a visit to its Lhakhang, continue through Lekpogang before reaching the Kudra campsite, which offers panoramic views of Nyimshong village and Zhemgang town.
Day 3: Kudra Village – Nabji Village
Distance: 11–14 km | Duration: 5–7 hours | Altitude: 1,500–1,300 m
This stretch winds through lush forests, streams, and waterfalls, creating a truly immersive wilderness experience. Wildlife sightings may include Himalayan squirrels, rhesus macaques, and occasionally larger species such as Himalayan black bears or red pandas. Upon arrival at Nabji, villagers offer a warm welcome. Surrounded by rice fields, the village provides a serene setting where you can also visit the local school and interact with children through games.
Day 4: Nabji Village – Korphu Village
Distance: 9.5–13 km | Duration: 2–3 hours | Altitude: 1,300–1,500 m
The trail leads past Nabji Temple, set among verdant fields and home to a sacred stone pillar symbolizing peace between ancient kings. Korphu, perched at 1,500 meters, is known for its exceptional hospitality. Visitors may be greeted with traditional ceremonies, songs, and dances. Guests can also take part in local games such as Khuru and Dego, and visit the village temple, which houses relics of the revered treasure revealer Pema Lingpa.
Day 5: Korphu Village – Nyimshong Village
Distance: 11–12 km | Duration: 4–6 hours | Altitude: 1,500–1,300 m
This scenic section is a highlight for birdwatchers, with over 395 species recorded in the area. The rare Rufous-necked Hornbill nests along the trail. The route features waterfalls, streams, and traditional bridges before reaching Nyimshong. In the evening, enjoy cultural performances at the village amphitheater, where local women share their love for music and dance.
Day 6: Nyimshong – Trongsa
Distance: 5–6 km | Duration: ~2 hours | Altitude: 1,300–1,000 m
The final day begins with a descent toward the Mangdi River, where you may spot herons, river lapwings, and Golden Langurs. A short but steep climb leads to the road, where your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Trongsa.
